Germán Garrido
Spanish

Germán Garrido received his Ph.D. in Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Literatures in 2017. His research interests include Latin American literature and culture, transnational/global studies, and queer theory. His current book project, "La Internacional Argentina: las cosmopolíticas queer de Copi, Néstor Perlongher y María Moreno (1971-1992)," explores the aesthetic and political potentials of traveling and migrant queer communities, examining these writers’ literary output alongside their involvement in queer and feminist activism. Germán's essays have appeared or are forthcoming in peer-reviewed journals such as Un Cuarto Propio, Catedral Tomada, and Escena: Revista de las Artes de la Universidad de Costa Rica. He has also contributed book chapters to The Cambridge History of Latin American Women's Literature (Ileana Rodríguez and Mónica Szurmuk, eds., Cambridge UP, 2015) and Fragmentos de lo Queer (Ricardo Manetti and Lucas Martinelli, eds., Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, 2016), where he published the outcome of an extensive research project on the Argentinean pop art and avant-garde theater group TSE in the late 1960s.

Aubrey Korneta
French

Aubrey Korneta received her PhD from NYU’s Department of French Literature, Thought, and Culture in 2017. Her dissertation entitled, “Writing (in) the School: Codes. Constraints. Emancipation?”, examines a growing corpus of French autobiographical novels and films set in the classroom and contends that it is through representations of the French classroom, and in particular, the relationships to the codes and norms of the French language, that the evolving images of the French public school system are most salient. Her research focuses on 20th - 21st century French and Francophone literature and film, with a particular interest in the representation of education, youth, and identity formation. Outside of the classroom, Aubrey coordinates a tutoring program called the Francophone Community Exchange, which partners NYU undergraduates studying French with primary school students at the dual-language New York French American Charter School (NYFACS) in Harlem.

Matthew MacLean
History

Matthew MacLean earned his PhD from the Joint Program in History and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies from New York University; his dissertation, "Spatial Transformations and the Emergence of 'the National': the Formation of the United Arab Emirates, 1950-1980," traces the politics of infrastructure and development in the UAE. He has been a Fulbright Scholar at Zayed University in Dubai (2006-07), a Humanities Research Fellow at NYU Abu Dhabi (2014-2015), and a Visiting Doctoral Scholar at the Sheikh Saud bin Saqr al-Qasimi Foundation for Policy Research in Ras Al Khaimah (2015-2016). He has also taught at NYU Abu Dhabi and is a Book Review Editor for Arab Studies Journal, and presented at conferences in the US, UAE, UK, Turkey, Kuwait, and Qatar. Prior to his academic career he taught social studies at Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn, NY.

Veronica Murphy
Chemistry

Veronica Murphy completed her PhD from the Department of Chemistry at NYU. Her dissertation, "Optical Activity of Achiral Molecules" aimed to reshape how optical activity is understood and, eventually, taught. Her research focuses on optical rotation in oriented molecules belonging to particular achiral point groups, a set of molecules normally understood not to display this property. By focusing on these molecules and making connections between quantum mechanical calculations and classical physics interpretations, her work also lead to understanding of optical rotation signs and magnitudes based on molecular structure.

Post Doctoral Fellow, Rocio Pichon-Riviere

Rocío Pichon-Rivière
Spanish

Rocío Pichon-Rivière received her PhD from NYU’s Department of Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Literatures and holds a BA with honors in Philosophy from the University of Buenos Aires. She researches recent intellectual history in Latin America and its transnational diasporic communities. Her dissertation and current book project, “The Skin of Politics: Latin American Phenomenologies on the Production of Difference,” studies a genealogy of women and trans women thinkers from Latin America, in the late 20th and the 21st centuries, who shared an interest in the skin as a metaphor to ground subjectivity in the intimacy of relations of power. Her audio-visual research on the intellectual scene of contemporary trans thinkers and artists in Argentina evolved into a documentary that is now in post-production. Her current interests include interdisciplinary political concepts, graphic novels and narratives, digital archives of oral history, decolonial feminist movements in the Global South, and creative writing in prison education.

Cortland Rankin
Cinema Studies

Cortland Rankin received his Ph.D. in Cinema Studies from NYU’s Department of Cinema Studies in 2016. He also holds an M.Phil in Screen Media and Cultures from the University of Cambridge and a B.A. in American Studies from Northwestern University. Rankin works on cinematic representations of urbanism and architecture as well as war cinema and media. His doctoral dissertation and current book project Two Tales of a City: New York’s Cinemas of Crisis and Reappropriation, 1965-85 examines how filmmakers across mainstream, independent, documentary, and experimental modes and genres appropriate and reappropriate urban environments to craft a range of narrative, aesthetic, and ideological responses to the city’s transition to a postindustrial metropolis between the 1960s and 1980s. His work has been published in NECSUS, European Journal of Media Studies and Film Platform and he has two forthcoming chapters in an anthology edited by Andrew Rayment and Paul Nadasdy entitled Hollywood and American War, which is dedicated to the study of films as war memorials. He has taught film studies courses at NYU, The New School, Columbia University, Hunter College, and the College of Staten Island on “Architecture, the City & Cinema,” “War Cinema,” and “The Western” as well as surveys of American and international film history and theory.

Dylan Yeats
History

Dylan Yeats is a Core Curriculum Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow at New York University whose work focuses on the relationship between politics and culture in U.S. History. His dissertation traces the relationship between evangelical Christian organizing, partisanship, and state policies in the 19th century. He has also taught and written about the politics of nativism, with a particular emphasis on Asian American History and Islamophobia, and recently co-edited Yellow Peril! An Archive of Anti-Asian Fear (Verso Press, 2014) with John Kuo Wei Tchen. As a public historian and trained archivist, Yeats has curated and consulted on numerous exhibits in New York City, where he also gives occasional tours of Brooklyn as a licensed sightseeing guide.
