The College Core Curriculum is intended to provide NYU-New York students with a foundational experience in the liberal arts. In general—and with the notable exception of foreign language study—opportunities for completing Core courses at global academic centers are limited.
First-Year Seminar
Students must complete a first-year seminar in their first year before they will be approved to study away from New York.
Expository Writing
Students must complete their Expository Writing course work in their first year before they will be approved to study away from New York.
Foreign Language
NYU’s global academic network offers extensive opportunities to begin or continue the study of foreign languages. For information, consult the course offerings on the Global Programs website.
Foundations of Contemporary Culture
• Texts and Ideas: This course is not typically offered at global academic centers. Students should therefore plan to complete it in New York.
• Cultures and Contexts: A limited number of Cultures and Contexts courses are offered at global academic centers. See the course listings for each semester’s offerings. See the course listings for each semester’s offerings.
• Societies and the Social Sciences: Only a very limited number of courses satisfying Societies and the Social Sciences are offered at global academic centers. For information, consult the course offerings on the Global Programs website.
• Expressive Culture: Expressive Culture courses are offered at a number of global academic centers. See the course listings for each semester’s offerings.
Foundations of Scientific Inquiry
• Quantitative Reasoning: Only a very limited number of courses satisfying Quantitative Reasoning are offered at global academic centers. For information, consult the course offerings on the Global Programs website.
• Physical Science and Life Science: Only a very limited number of courses satisfying Physical Science and Life Science are offered at global academic centers. For information, consult the course offerings on the Global Programs website.
NYU-Abu Dhabi and NYU-Shanghai

January-Term Restriction
In cases where a department course is approved to satisfy a component of the Core (whether offered in New York or elsewhere on the global academic network), note that such approval does not include January-term versions of these courses.
