The Zuckerman Forum The Zuckerman Forum is a new initiative at NYU aimed at encouraging academic and intellectual discourse throughout the University. The competition takes place at the undergraduate level, but through its course will provide a true Forum for critical argument between undergraduates, graduate students, and distinguished faculty. Online Registration will open Monday, October 15th, 2007. Registration will close Friday, November 30th. The Preliminary Competition will be Friday, February 22nd, 2008. The 2007 CAS Golden Dozen Awards The Golden Dozen Awards are given annually to twelve faculty members who are chosen by their colleagues and students for their outstanding teaching and service to the College. Selection is based on nominations from students and faculty, plus course evaluation over several years, the nominees own teaching dossier, and a departmental assessment. more...
2006 Jurow Lecture The speaker for the 10th annual Irving H. Jurow Lecture was Helene Cixous, noted scholar and author who is affiliated with the Centre de Recherches en Etudes Feminines, The University of Paris. Professor Cixous is a post-Lacanian feminist who was one of the founders of Poststructuralist Feminist Theory. A philosopher, novelist, and playwright, she worked closely with the late Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, and other French intellectuals. Her recent books include Portrait of Jacques Derrida as a Young Jewish Saint and Insister: à Jacques Derrida. Her talk, entitled "The Infinite Taste of Dreams" took place on Thursday, October 12 at 5:30 P.M., in Hemmerdinger Hall (100 Washington Square East).
Scholars Lecture Series Initiated in spring 1994, the Scholars Lecture Series is designed to encourage and promote the exchange of ideas among our most distinguished guest lecturers, University faculty, and students in the Scholars Program. The lecture series further enhances the intellectual experience, cultural awareness, and social consciousness of exceptional students in the College of Arts and Science.
Dean's Lecture on American Poetry The College hosted a lecture by David Lehman to celebrate the publication of the Oxford Book of American Poetry. David Lehman is a poet, critic, and editor. He initiated the Best American Poetry series in 1988, and continues as the general editor of the distinguished anthology. He has taught a Freshman Honors Seminar in the College since 1997, Great Poems. His lecture, "American Poetry and the Impulse to Make it New" was held on Monday, April 3 at 5:30 P.M., in Hemmerdinger Hall.
2008 Undergraduate Research Conference The Undergraduate Research Conference took place on Friday, April 25, at 10 A.M. in Silver Center. Undergraduate researchers read their papers and presented posters. A ceremony honoring the student prize-winners, faculty judges, and DURF donors followed the conference.
Images of Benjamin Franklin as seen by himself and others The College of Arts and Science, in conjunction with its Division of Libraries, hosted an exhibition and conference in honor of the 300th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Franklin. The exhibition was on display in the Mamdouha S. Bobst Gallery in NYU's Bobst Library, 70 Washington Square South, beginning on February 2 through December, 2006. more...
