Freshman Programs
In order to help new students adjust and succeed, the College makes available special resources and programs just for first-year students. These include: the Assistant Dean for Freshmen, the Freshman Dialogue, Freshman Orientation, and PALS (Freshman Peer Alliance).
(905G The Silver Center, 998-8167) One of the goals of the Assistant Dean for Freshmen is to listen to and guide students through the first year. There is a strong connection between the academic advisers for freshmen and the Freshman Dean's Office so that students receive support and attention and are directed to resources as their needs become apparent. The Assistant Dean for Freshmen also sponsors special social and academic programs throughout the year.
The Freshman Dialogue is intended to introduce students to the intellectual and cultural life of the College, the University, and the City. Over the summer all first-year students read a text chosen to explore a particular theme; during the September orientation they participate in small discussion groups led by well-known NYU faculty members; and in the fall they attend a performance related to the issues raised by the text. In addition, lectures, field trips, and a film series on campus continue the Dialogue throughout the year.
Incoming first-year students attend one of five three-day orientation sessions sponsored by the College during the summer. Students stay in residence halls and engage in a wide variety of academic and social activities. College advisers inform students about degree and curriculum requirements and, after a round of placement exams is completed, help them register for Fall classes. In addition, students receive an introduction to the Freshman Dialogue and learn about other follow-up cultural activities in the city. Finally, students meeting in small groups with undergraduate and graduate leaders attend seminars on safety and responsibility aid in the transition to the larger life of the University and New York City. Later, when students arrive in September, they participate in University-wide orientation activities; they also attend the College's Freshman Convocation and take part in the Freshman Dialogue.
This program provides freshmen with a direct link to a returning student in the College, who offers peer guidance and assistance.
