Preoptometry Info

Special information for Preoptometry Students

The requirements for acceptance into a school of optometry are similar to those for medical and dental schools, with the exception that most optometry schools have an added requirement of one semester or more of psychology, statistics and microbiology. In addition, several schools require ONE not two semesters of organic chemistry and also recommend biochemistry.

Become familiar with the websites of schools that interest you and their specific prerequisites. Also visit the websites of the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry, http://www.opted.org/, and the American Optometric Association, http://www.aoa.org/.

Preoptometry students need to take the Optometry Admission Test (OAT), which is offered several times per year. For information on the exam and on registration, look for the link at http://www.opted.org/.
