The College of Arts and Science offers numerous ways to engage with sustainability. As a liberal arts college, CAS's commitment to sustainability is most directly realized through its educational mission. Students address challenges facing the environment through course work, study abroad, opportunities for research, internships, and community engagement. Furthermore, through our partnership with the NYU Office of Sustainability, our students have many opportunities for co-curricular engagement: ECOReps are green advocates in their residence halls, spreading the word about sustainable action in fun and attractive ways.

Similarly, the College Administration has prioritized our pragmatic commitment to sustainability in recognition of the individual roles we play as stewards of our natural resources. The Dean's Office has launched a zero waste initiative in the Silver Center for Arts & Science, initiating compost collection on key floors and select departments. Anyone wishing to participate in these projects, please contact us or share your own ideas on how we might achieve these important goals together and make the Silver Center a showcase for sustainability on campus.

Environmental Studies Program

In addition to the major and minor offerings through the Department of Environmental Studies, students can find courses dealing with topics of the environment and sustainability in many of our departments.

Research Grant Opportunities for Sustainability Initiatives

As a major research university that is uniquely embedded in the urban fabric of New York City, NYU cannot only develop resources, ideas, and practices that further university sustainability efforts, it can also export its knowledge to cities and urban centers all over the world. Towards this end, we offer our students several funding outlets to promote and engage student research around sustainability.

Scholarship Opportunities

The NY state chapter of SWANA (Solid Waste Association of North America) has scholarships for undergraduates doing research on waste. Visit the website to learn more!

Dean's Undergraduate Research Fund

Whether you are looking to investigate plant biology for sustainable food production or design an innovative green solution grounded in research , the Dean’s Undergraduate Research Fund was created to assist students in funding their projects. To highlight a recent successful project: the 2015–16 Richard Robins Entrepreneurial Research Scholars developed a study "Recycling Signage and Behavior Change." Their video documents their ongoing research on the impact of signage on recycling behavior at NYU.
