CAS Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (JEDI) Council
Formed during the summer of 2020 and driven by the mission of the college, the CAS Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Council was created to serve in an advisory capacity to the work of the Dean of CAS and to aid in the promotion of IDEBA throughout the CAS community. The CAS JEDI Council recognizes the complexities of the world we live in and the cultures and identities that we represent, and we celebrate all voices and persons within the CAS community and are committed to creating inclusive spaces where all community members feel respected and that they belong.
The CAS JEDI Council is composed of students, faculty, staff, and alumni that are dedicated to honoring the diverse cultures and voices of the CAS community and building a culture of respect, justice, inclusion and equity. Members of the CAS JEDI Council work within a collective group as well as through subgroups that focus on inclusive teaching practices and pedagogy, bias response and frameworks, scholarship and access, recognition and visibility, and other areas relevant to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion within the CAS community.
DIVERSITY WITHIN CAS
We view diversity as the ongoing processes and actions that serve to create critical spaces of affirmation and empowerment to the entire spectrum of present and future identities, experiences, and perspectives, as well as to groups that have been historically marginalized and/or excluded from higher education.
At the center of our definition are inclusion and belonging, defined by an equitable distribution of power; participatory decision-making; all participants having an impactful say in the actions that affect their experiences (in the classroom and the workplace); and space(s) for conversations around power dynamics and differentials.
The pursuit of diversity, equity and inclusion is lifelong.
HISTORY OF CAS JEDI COUNCIL
In June of 2020, Dean Gene Jarrett, Dean of CAS, issued a statement acknowledging the horrific period NYU’s global community faced and called for support of the CAS community. Following several meetings with Dr. Coleman, Senior Vice President for Global Inclusion and Strategic Innovation and NYU’s Chief Diversity Officer, and Candace Sumner-Robinson, Assistant Dean of Diversity and International Advising and the Director of the Academic Achievement Program (AAP), Dean Jarrett convened a group of active and committed CAS community members comprised of students, faculty, staff, and alumni to form the CAS Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Council. This group was charged to assess the diversity, equity, and inclusion challenges, successes, existing resources, and programming that would best support a diverse CAS student body. Furthermore, the JEDI Council was tasked with addressing “the College’s longstanding energy in conceiving and implementing lessons, practices, and long-term strategies for advancing justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in the best interest of our students [and broader CAS community]" (Dean Jarrett, 2020).
