NYU students are eligible to enroll in certain language courses offered at Columbia University during each fall and spring semester (summer sessions are not included). The list of language courses available to NYU students can be found in Albert, under Columbia Language Exchange (subject code COLU-UA).
Language courses offered include the following (subject to change):
Armenian, Bengali, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Catalan, Czech (intermediate level only), Dutch, Finnish, Hungarian, Indonesian, Polish, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Swahili (only when not offered in CAS), Swedish, Classical Tibetan, Modern Tibetan, Ottoman Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Wolof, Yoruba (intermediate level only), and Zulu.
Most, but not all language courses are offered in a sequential pattern; i.e., Elementary I and Intermediate I are offered in the fall, and Elementary II and Intermediate II are offered in the spring. Not every language or course level is necessarily offered every semester.
Students can enroll in courses through the intermediate level; for students in CAS, completion of the intermediate II level satisfies the CAS foreign language requirement. Students interested in advanced level courses of these languages should email cas.cle@nyu.edu. Graduate students at NYU typically must also receive permission from their home school before they can enroll in a course.
Enrolling in a language course
Students who wish to enroll in a course must complete this google form in order to obtain an access code. Note: students must be logged into their NYU email account in order to complete the form.
Students with no background in the language must begin at the Elementary I level (no placement exam required). Students with a background in the language must be evaluated by Columbia faculty to determine their proper placement. Email cas.cle@nyu.edu to arrange a placement exam.
Important Enrollment Information
- After enrolling in Albert, your information will be sent to Columbia University to be added to their registration system. You will be notified via email once this is done; you can then obtain a Columbia University ID card and email account (see Columbia University’s website for more information). If you have not received this email prior to the beginning of the semester, please attend your course and inform the instructor that your registration is still processing.
- If you decide to drop the course, you must immediately email cas.cle@nyu.edu in order to be dropped. We will then notify Columbia University and they will drop you on their registration system as well. It is not sufficient to drop the class on Albert.
- The classroom locations can be found by searching the course in Columbia’s class directory.
- Some courses carry a language resource fee and/or materials fee placed by Columbia University. The fee typically ranges from $10-$30 and will be listed on the course page in Columbia’s class directory. If you do not see a fee listed, then your language course does not carry a fee.
- Columbia University’s academic calendar may differ from NYU’s academic calendar. You can find Columbia's academic calendar here.
