From its position at the center of a major university, the College of Arts and Science (CAS) is able to offer a variety of minors in partnership with NYU's professional schools. These minors, which are open to all CAS students, are either partly or wholly composed of courses from participating schools outside of CAS. In order to declare a minor offered by a school other than CAS, students should complete the online Minor Application (available in the dropdown menu of the Albert Student Center). In order to declare a minor offered by the College, students should visit the department hosting the minor and declare the minor in person. Both cross-school and CAS minors may be removed using the online Minor Application in Albert.
CAS students must complete a total of 128 credits to earn the Bachelor's degree. At least half of these (64) must be from CAS coursework, and no more than 16 may be from non-liberal arts (e.g., non-CAS) coursework. Students may petition for a non-liberal arts credit limit increase through the Committee on Academic Standards (Office of the Associate Dean for Students, Silver Center, Room 909, 212-998-8140).
With the exception of the Cinema Studies minor, all courses taken outside of CAS to complete cross-school minor requirements count toward the 16-point limit on non-liberal arts coursework. Since many of these minors require 16 points of coursework outside of CAS, students are encouraged to develop their course of study in consultation with a College advisor. CAS courses (with a -UA suffix in the course code) taken to complete cross-school minor requirements will not count toward the non-liberal arts credit limit.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is the process for declaring a cross-school minor?
For minors offered by one of the other NYU schools, you must fill out the online Minor Application (available in the dropdown menu of the Albert Student Center). In order to declare a minor offered by CAS, students should visit the department hosting the minor and declare the minor in person. It can take up to 10 days for a minor to appear on a student's transcript and academic requirements report in Albert. If, after 10 days, the minor has not appeared, you should contact the person listed as your Home School Advising Contact on the Minor Application receipt email.
How do I drop a cross-school minor?
Both cross-school and CAS minors may be removed using the online Minor Application in Albert.
Albert is preventing me from registering for a course that I need for my minor. How I can I register for this course?
Many courses outside the College are under controlled enrollment and even students with a declared minor in that department/school are prevented from registering for these courses on Albert. If you are blocked from registering you must contact the department offering the course. Cross-registration procedures vary by department so it is important to contact the department early in the registration process.
How can I increase the 16-credit limit on non-liberal arts coursework (non-CAS coursework)?
Students may petition for a non-liberal arts credit limit increase through the Committee on Academic Standards (Office of the Associate Dean for Students, Silver Center, Room 909, 212-998-8140). While CAS regularly allows students to increase this limit, approval is by not guaranteed. You are therefore encouraged to consult with an advisor about your academic plans and to submit your petition as soon as those plans are finalized.
Can I count the same course towards both my major and my cross-school minor?
The department/school offering both the major and minor must approve any double-counting of courses. You should contact both your major department and the department/school hosting the cross-school minor to determine whether you can double-count a specific course.
Do I have to take the exact courses listed in the minor? May I substitute courses?
The department/school offering the minor determines course requirements and must approve any course substitutions. You should contact the department/school to request a substitution prior to registration and, if the substitution is approved, follow up to make sure that this approval is posted to your Degree Progress Report (accessible via the Academic Requirements link in the drop-down menu on the left of your Albert Student Center). Do not assume that your request for a substitution will be approved.
