Current Business Studies Minor Requirements

Which Track Are You?

For all students who matriculated into NYU in Fall 2018 or later, there are two tracks to the Business Studies minor. The track you follow is based on one simple question:

Are you a current/future Econ major or minor, or in the School of Professional Studies Real Estate program?

Track A General Requirements

Students following Track A of the Business Studies minor typically must complete 24-26 credits of coursework in the following areas:

Economics

  • One course in Microeconomics
  • One course in Macroeconomics

Calculus-level Mathematics

  • One course in Calculus-level Mathematics

Statistics and Regression

  • One course in Statistics
  • One course in regression

Financial Accounting

  • One course in financial accounting

Stern School of Business Core Elective

  • One elective in Stern

PLEASE NOTE: All normal prerequisites apply for Business Studies courses. Please consult each course's home department website for more information about prerequisites. 

Track A Business Studies course requirements/conditions

  • A minimum grade of C is required for all courses intended to count toward the minor, and the minimum overall GPA required in the minor is 2.0.
  • AP or other advanced standing coursework can be used to satisfy two required minor courses. For more information, please see the Transfer/AP/IB Credits page.
  • Students use transfer courses to satisfy up to half of their required Econ/Math/Statistics courses (i.e. approximately 2 courses/8 credits) and half of their Financial Accounting/Business Electives (i.e. 1 course/4 credits). For more information, please see the Transfer/AP/IB Credits page.
  • Students can double count up to two courses between Business Studies and another major or minor. Please review the Overlapping Requirements page for more information.
  • CAS students should note that all courses taken in Stern for this minor will count toward the 16 credit limit on course work outside of CAS. Students seeking additional non-CAS credits beyond the 16 credit limit must speak with their academic advisor. Regardless of the number of non-CAS credits a student earns, each CAS student is required to complete 64 credits in CAS (-UA) courses.

Economics

Students must satisfy each of the following components, with NYU coursework or approved equivalent credit:

Introduction to Macroeconomics 

Can be satisfied by

  • ECON-UA 1, Introduction to Macroeconomics (4 credits)
  • Students in the Global Liberal Studies program (2-year Core or 4-year degree) ONLY: ECI-UF 101
  • AP or other advanced standing credit
  • An approved transfer course

Introduction to Microeconomics

Can be satisfied by

  • ECON UA 2, Introduction to Microeconomics (4 credits)
  • Students in the Global Liberal Studies program (2-year Core or 4-year degree) ONLY: ECI-UF 102
  • AP or other advanced standing credit
  • An approved transfer course

Students with eligible A-level exam results in Economics (typically a B or better) or IB exam results in Economics (a 6 or 7 on an HL exam) will satisfy both components of the Econ requirement with their advanced standing credit. Please contact cas.business@nyu.edu for more information.

Mathematics

Students can satisfy the Calculus-level Math requirement with one of the following courses:

  • Math for Economics 1 (MATH-UA 131 (formerly MATH-UA 211))
  • Calculus 1 (MATH-UA 121)
  • Tandon School of Engineering student ONLY: Calculus 2 (MA-UY 1124)
  • AP or other equivalent advanced standing credit

Statistics and Regression

There are two parts to the Buinsess Studies Statistics requirements:

Statistics

(typically covered by an approved 4-credit statistical reasoning course)

  • Statistics (ECON-UA 18)
  • Analytical Statistics (ECON-UA 20)
  • Statistics for Behavioral Sciences (PYSCH-UA 10)
  • Mathematical Statistics (MATH-UA 234)
  • Quantitative Methods in Political Science (POL-UA 800)
  • Statistics for Social Research (SOC-UA 302)
  • Statistics for Business Control (STAT-UB 1)
  • Tandon School of Engineering students ONLY: Data Analysis (MA-UY 2224) or Applied Statistics (MA-UY 4114)
  • An approved transfer course
  • Statistics for Business Control and Forecasting Models (STAT-UB 103, 6 credits). This is a 6-credit, one-semester course that covers both statistics and regression/forecasting models. 

Regression

  • Usually satisfied by STAT-UB 3 (a 2-credit Stern course). 
    • Please note: STAT-UB 3 (Regression and Forecasting Models) requires the completion of a course in statistics as a prerequisite. Students should plan to take their statistics course in one semester, and STAT-UB 3 in a following semester
  • Statistics for Business Control and Forecasting Models (STAT-UB 103, 6 credits). This is a 6-credit, one-semester course that covers both statistics and regression/forecasting models. 

Note on the Statistics Requirement:

  • Foundations of Finance (FINC-UB 2) and Operations Management (OPMG-UB 1): These two courses require completion of a course in statistics and a course in regression as a prerequisite.
    • Only ECON-UA 18, ECON-UA 20, STAT-UB 1, and STAT-UB 103 satisfy the Statistics prerequisite for these two courses. Students who plan on taking either of these two Stern courses should plan to take one of these Statistics courses.

Financial Accounting

Students can satisfy this component with:

  • Principles of Financial Accounting (ACCT-UB 1, 4 credits)
  • Approved transfer credit

Stern Core Elective

Business Studies minors complete this component with 1 course chosen from the following options:

  • Management and Organizations (MGMT-UB 1, 4 credits)
  • Introduction to Marketing (MKTG-UB 1, 4 credits)
  • Information Technology in Business and Society (TECH-UB 1, 4 credits)
  • Operations Management (OPMG-UB 1)

Students may also complete this component with transfer credit approved as equivalent to one of the above courses. Study abroad and NYU Shanghai courses approved as equivalent to any of the above courses will also satisfy this component of the minor.

Additional stern Electives

Students may not normally double-count more than 2 courses towards their Business Studies minor and another major/minor.

In these cases where more than 2 courses are double-counted, Business Studies minors must take 1 additional Stern elective, selected from the list below, for each course double-counted beyond the allowed 2.

  • Any Stern Core elective not already counted towards the Business Studies minor
  • Managerial Accounting (ACCT-UB 4, 4 credits)

TRACK B REQUIREMENTS

Reminder: Track B of the Business Studies minor is only followed by Economics majors/minors, or students in the SPS Real Estate program. All other students complete Track A

Track B of the Business Studies minor typically consists of 18-20 credits of coursework

Financial Accounting

  • One course in Financial Accounting

Stern Core Elective 

  • One course chosen from a list of approved Stern electives

Additional Stern Electives

  • Two courses chosen from a list of approved Stern electives

Regression

  • One course chosen from a list of approved options

Track B: Additional stern electives

For their two additional Stern electives, Track B students must take two courses chosen from any of the following categories:

  • Any Stern Core elective not already counted towards the Business Studies minor
  • Managerial Accounting (ACCT-UB 4, 4 credits)
  • Foundations of Finance (FINC-UB 2, 4 credits)

Track B: Regression

Students following Track B must also take a course in covering regression and forecasting. Currently approved options include:

  • STAT-UB 3, Regression and Forecasing Models (2 credits). Please note: The prerequisite for this course is an approved course in Statistics. Please see Albert course listing for approved prerequisites.
  • STAT-UB 103, Statistics for Business Control and Regress and Forecasting Models (6 credits)
  • ECON-UA 266, Introduction to Econometrics (4 credits). Please note: Prerequisites for this course include MATH-UA 212 and ECON-UA 18/20. 

All prerequisites for the above courses are strictly enforced.
