What Do We Do?
Located within the College of Arts and Sciences, the Expository Writing Program teaches first year-required composition courses to students across CAS, the Tisch School of the Arts, NYU Tandon, the Silver School of Social Work, the Rory Meyers School of Nursing, and the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. These courses are part of the College Core Curriculum, and are a key shared experience for more than 5000 NYU students every year, including international students and other non-native writers of English. EWP is the publisher of Mercer Street and West Fourth, annual collections of stand-out student writing from our classes at NYU. We also offer upper-level elective classes and writing groups designed to engage students in a variety of essayistic writing endeavors.
EWP is home to NYU’s Writing Center, which offers writing support to students across our Washington Square and Brooklyn campuses. Our peer tutoring programs include in-course undergraduate tutors, writing partners for multilingual writers, and development programs for undergraduate and graduate tutors. Our Writing in the Disciplines program offers stand-alone workshops for students, as well as in-class consultations and collaborations with faculty across the university. Other university partners include GSAS, the Leadership Initiative (including the Office of Global Awards), the PreCollege Program, the Wasserman Center for Career Development, the Office of Residential Life & Housing Services, NYU Shanghai and NYU Abu Dhabi’s Writing Programs, and the NYU School of Law.
