The Writing Partners Program at Washington Square is designed for undergraduate multilingual writers who are eager to engage in a long-term process of improving their writing in English. As a participant in the program, you will be paired with a dedicated peer tutor, who will collaborate actively with you during weekly 45-minute conferences as you draft and revise your writing. The writing partners are good listeners and careful readers. They will approach your writing with curiosity and openness, helping you to clarify what you want to say and how you want to say it. Just as important, as peers who have taken their own writing-intensive courses at NYU, the writing partners will draw on and offer advice from their own experiences, helping you to understand the expectations and the possibilities of academic writing. Working with a writing partner will help you to manage your time, develop effective writing habits, and guarantee you a weekly opportunity to collaborate on your writing with an engaged and thoughtful peer. Whether you are working on your writing assignments for Core courses or for a course in your major, your writing partner will support you at every stage of the writing process.
What to expect:
When you decide to work with the Writing Partners Program, you are choosing to set aside a dedicated time each week to work on your writing with a trusted and empathetic peer. In your initial sessions, your writing partner will ask you about your experiences as a writer and listen to your hopes and concerns, helping you to set goals for the semester. In subsequent sessions, you will collaborate with your partner on a range of assignments of your choosing: you might bring in a draft or a writing exercise to review; you might spend your session brainstorming ideas; you might work on analyzing and reflecting on assigned readings; or you might work on refining sentence-level issues, including word choice, grammar and stylistic conventions, and clarity. Throughout your work together, your writing partner will design activities that help you to develop your writing skills and reflect more deeply on your writing process. Throughout the collaboration, your writing partner’s goal will be to encourage and help you to gain confidence in expressing your ideas effectively for an academic audience.
How do I sign up for the Program?
Please contact us at ewp-writing-partners@nyu.edu to receive a link to our “Letter of Interest” form. You should also log in to the Writing Center On-Line Scheduler (https://nyu.mywconline.com/) and give yourself an account name and password—you will need these to sign up for the Program.
Note that you will have a greater chance to secure a partnership if you contact us early in the semester, but you may send your request at any time: if we don’t have an availability at that time, we will put you on the waitlist.
If you have any additional questions about the Writing Partners Program, please contact us at ewp-writing-partners@nyu.edu. We look forward to working with you!
