In the Writing Center, you will be working with one of the following:
Faculty Consultants (FC) are EWP faculty members who also teach writing courses.
Senior Tutors (ST) are upper-level undergraduate peer tutors who have excelled in Core courses and gained expertise in one of our other peer tutoring programs.
Whether working with a Faculty Consultant or a Senior Tutor, all consultants will:
They will listen carefully, ask you questions, and respond respectfully to your concerns.
They will collaborate actively with you, discussing your thoughts and offering you choices to consider as you revise.
They will design activities with you to generate new writing, learn new techniques, and help you develop your argument.
- They will suggest new approaches to your writing, so you can start to build more effective habits and long-term skills.
- Your consultant or tutor won’t proofread but will give you feedback on style, language choices, and rhetorical conventions.
What are Faculty Consultants like?
Faculty consultants are professors in the Expository Writing Program with expertise in a wide range of disciplines and subject areas, including specialized knowledge about everything from teaching multilingual writers, to research and thesis writing in various fields, to writing personal or academic statements of purpose, and more. They choose to consult in the Writing Center because they are committed to individualized teaching and learning and to collaborating generously and empathetically with student writers. Faculty consultants will offer you thoughtful advice on how to revise an essay draft, help you to reflect on your learning as a writer, and encourage you to add your distinct voice to the larger discussions of academia. In addition, faculty consultants not only work one-on-one with student writers from across the University but also lead EWP’s writing workshops, facilitate our writing groups and discipline-specific support services, design our writing resources, and mentor our peer tutors.
What are Senior Tutors like?
Just as in a conference with a faculty consultant, you can expect a senior tutor to ask you questions about your writing and your process, to listen and respond generously to your concerns, to collaborate with you on ways to revise, and to design opportunities for you to write and try new techniques during the session. As advanced NYU undergraduates themselves, senior tutors not only offer a fresh perspective on your draft but can also share their own experiences in navigating the demands of writing at NYU: many student writers choose to work with senior tutors expressly for this reason. The senior tutors have gained experience working as writing tutors in courses across CAS or as writing partners assisting multilingual writers, and they have learned practices that can help you at any stage of your writing process, from outlining and analyzing to researching, drafting, and revising. Whether you meet with a senior tutor once or multiple times, you can expect a welcoming and generative collaboration, one that encourages you to build more effective practices and gain more confidence in your voice as a writer.
