Below are the learning outcomes for each year of the Cohort Program, organized by our four themes: Academic Success, Personal and Career Development, Community Engagement, and Leadership Experience.
ACADEMIC SUCCESS
First-Year
- Students will be introduced to NYU academic resources, including the University Learning Center and the Writing Center.
Students will develop a knowledge base about key NYU library spaces and services.
Students will develop an understanding of the CAS academic integrity policy.
Students will discover opportunities to connect with and explore academic departments, and will be encouraged to consider potential majors.
Students will visit an academic department in person.
Students will be introduced to research opportunities at NYU.
Students will enroll in a First-Year Seminar, a small course that allows them to establish a relationship with a professor and their peers.
Second-Year
Students will declare their major by the end of the academic year.
Students will establish a connection with their respective academic departments by the end of their second year.
Students will learn how to leverage their CAS major in preparation for post-graduation career opportunities.
Junior Year
Students will expand their academic involvement by learning about and engaging with academic opportunities on campus such as research, BA/MA programs and departmental honors.
Senior Year
Students will celebrate their academic successes within their academic departments.
Students will proactively apply to graduate and pursue degree audits in order to have their degrees conferred on time.
PERSONAL AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT
First-Year
Students will be connected with the Wasserman Center for Career Development via an in-person cohort visit and customized session led by a Wasserman Career Coach, their advisor, and their College Leader.
Students will create a Handshake account to explore and connect with relevant professional opportunities.
Students will build an understanding of Wasserman services and resources.
Students will interact with and explore difference via CAS Orientation programs, the first-year cohort meeting curriculum, and cohort-wide events led by their College Leader.
Students will be introduced to peers that are engaged and connected in and outside of the classroom through a student panel.
Second-Year
Students participating in the Leadership Development Series (LDS) will learn effective career-related goal setting strategies and gain the transferable skills necessary to achieve these goals.
Students participating in the Global Leadership Development Series will learn to leverage their study away experience in their career development process.
Students will have opportunities to connect with CAS alumni through the Alumni Mentor Program.
Junior Year
Students will gain practical experience through internships, volunteer opportunities or part-time jobs.
Students will learn how to successfully navigate the job/internship search/interview process by taking advantage of resources, workshops and events offered through the Wasserman Center for Career Development.
Students will have the opportunity to make professional connections with CAS alumni at the annual Career Conversations event.
Senior Year
Students will integrate their academic, personal, and professional experience into a cohesive narrative for interviews/applications.
Students will navigate the job/graduate school search process and apply for jobs/programs.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
First-Year
Students will build community and connections -- in one-on-one, small group, and large group settings -- within their cohorts and throughout the first-year class, beginning with CAS Orientation events and progressing through the year.
Students will be introduced to/connect with the larger NYC community through service activities during orientation and throughout the year.
- Students will have opportunities to connect with the larger campus through the First-Year Class Board’s on-campus, large-scale events.
Second-Year
Students will have opportunities to connect with the larger campus through the Second-Year Class Board’s on-campus, large-scale events.
- Students will have opportunities to connect with the larger NYC and surrounding community through the fall semester Cohort President off-campus trip and the spring semester Global Leader off-campus trip.
Junior Year
Students will have the opportunity to engage with each other and the local community by participating in a week-long Alternative Break program. (CAS AB will launch in mid-2021 with the first Spring Break program 2022.)
Students will have the opportunity to participate in several class-wide events planned by the Junior Class Board to develop pride and identity as CAS juniors.
- Students will give back to the NYU community through participation in the Daffodil Day event. This event will be in partnership with the Daffodil Project and the NYU Office of Sustainability.
Senior Year
Students will connect their network within the senior class to their life beyond the Square by participating in social events planned by the Senior Class Board and other campus groups.
Students will make long-term investments in the NYU community that strengthen their identity as a senior class and encourage their participation as young alumni.
- Students will reflect on and celebrate their achievements (in the NYU and NYC communities) with NYU peers and mentors.
Leadership Experience
First-Year
Students will be introduced to different Cohort Program leadership positions (including College Leader and Cohort President) available to second-year students.
Students will be introduced to goal setting, network building, and the NYU Leadership Initiative.
Second-Year
Students will gain self-awareness of their leadership style and leverage their strengths to work effectively on a team through the Leadership Development Series and the Global Leadership Development Series.
Students will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through intentional experiential learning opportunities in the Leadership Development Series and the Global Leadership Development Series.
Students will have the opportunity to implement leadership skills through leadership positions within CAS and the greater NYU Community.
Junior Year
Site Leaders will build leadership skills while developing the Alternative Break program curriculum and schedule, and leading their peers in the week-long program (inaugural program in Spring 2022).
Students will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills through leadership positions within CAS and the greater NYU Community.
Senior Year
Students will share their stories and experiences with younger students and the NYU community at large through mentorship positions.
Students will brand the leadership experiences they’ve had in a way that will be attractive to employers/graduate schools.
Students will begin to conceptualize the ways in which they can be leaders in the larger, global community after graduation.
- Students will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills through leadership positions within CAS and the greater NYU Community.
