Can I talk to my advisor?
You will receive an email from cas.newstudents@nyu.edu in the beginning of May asking you to complete the virtual advising portal. After the portal closes, you will be assigned to a CAS Advisor who will reach out to you during June to help you register for Fall semester classes.

What’s a recitation?
For courses with both a lecture and a recitation, you will register for both at the same time. Recitations are a much smaller class meeting than the weekly large lecture-style class meeting; they are held weekly to review the lecture and the assignments, readings, etc. you have done that past week. Recitations are typically led by graduate students and are useful in helping you understand and interpret your readings and any assignments. Recitations are designed for questions about anything relevant to the course and to facilitate conversations around class material.

Can I take a Summer course somewhere else before I start at NYU?
Since you are not yet a matriculated CAS student, you can take a summer course at a local community or 4-year college, and CAS will likely count the course for credit if it is an academic course in which you receive a B or better. Once you are a matriculated CAS student, the College will no longer accept credit from other colleges and universities. Take a look here for more detail.

Can I take NYU summer 2022 classes even though I am admitted for the Fall 2022 semester?
Yes, but you need to first apply to be an NYU Visiting Student for Summer 2022. Be sure to review deadlines and submit your application here. Once you submit your application, it will be approved and you will be provided with the next steps to register. Please note: before applying for summer courses as part of the Visiting Student program, we recommend you consult with the Office of Financial Aid to ensure your personal financial situation aligns with the Visiting Student program’s costs (ex: tuition and fees).

How can I find what NYU classes are offered in Summer 2022?
You can find CAS' Summer 2022 course offerings by searching the Summer 2022 section of NYU Albert's Course Search (Albert is NYU's course registration system).
Additionally, there are some great courses which were originally scheduled for a global location but are now being offered online to all students, including incoming transfers. You can review the list of available CAS Summer Abroad courses here (again, these are now being offered online to all students). Please note that most Summer Abroad course offerings have course start dates that align roughly with Summer Session I, which starts at the end of May. There are also language offerings at the elementary, intermediate and advanced levels to help you fulfill language requirements.

All core classes are closed! Ahhh!
Core classes will open at the beginning of the registration process, as we want to ensure that all students have an opportunity to enroll. Don’t worry-- your advisor will work with you to ensure you’re enrolled for a full course load of classes that fulfill various requirements in the fall semester.

What's a waitlist? Can I get off of the waitlist? Can I add waitlisted courses to my schedule?
A waitlist indicates that a class is currently at capacity and, instead of closing, is compiling a list of students who are waiting to get into the course in the event that other students drop it. Please note that adding yourself to a course’s waitlist is not the same as enrolling in the course. While it’s possible to get off of a waitlist, there is no guarantee that you will, so it’s important to exercise a bit of flexibility in looking at other course times/options that have openings.

How do I change my major?
At this stage, you have not made a binding decision as to what your major will be. All incoming CAS students are asked to indicate a planned major on their applications to NYU, but this is not the same as declaring your major. In fact, all NYU students actually enter NYU as undeclared majors! You will be able to declare (and, if necessary, change) your intended major at any point during your first two years at NYU.
