A College of Arts and Science student may submit an interest form to study away for one semester or a full academic year at NYU Abu Dhabi or NYU Shanghai (degree-granting portal campuses); at an NYU global academic center; or through NYU’s international exchange program. Students may contact the Office of Global Programs (383 Lafayette Street, New York, NY, 10003-4170; 212-998-4433; www.nyu.edu/studyaway) for information on study away options. For specific details about summer study away, visit www.nyu.edu/summer/abroad/cas.
All CAS students must consult their academic adviser in the College Advising Center (726 Broadway, 7th floor; 212-998-8130), or, if they have already declared a major, in their department, for detailed and tailored advice and approval of a specific course of study away from Washington Square. Before students can register for study away courses, their adviser must sign off on the course work they will complete.
Note. Some study away courses bearing the suffixes –UH (NYU Abu Dhabi) and –SHU (NYU Shanghai) are approved not to count against each CAS student’s 16-point allowance in the other schools of NYU. In addition, some of these courses are also approved to count toward a CAS major or minor, either as a course equivalent or as a major/minor elective. Students should check with their adviser and view course descriptions at the NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai websites.
However, no –UH or –SHU courses can count toward the 64 credits that internal or external transfer students are required to complete in CAS (–UA) courses, even if they are accepted toward a CAS major or minor.
Students interested in studying away must submit an online interest form at www.nyu.edu/studyaway. Please note the fall and spring semester application deadlines at this website. Students are encouraged to plan ahead and apply early, as some programs fill quickly. Students should confirm their eligibility to participate at the Global Programs Office web page.
Requests are processed and reviewed by the Office of Global Programs, as well as by the Office of the Associate Dean for Students in CAS. In some cases, a study away program may not be appropriate for a student due to issues with academic and disciplinary standing and/or progress to degree. Notification letters are sent directly to the applicant with instructions for registration and obtaining a student visa; pre-departure arrangements; and orientation information.
CAS students who wish to study away in a non-NYU program must petition the Office of the Associate Dean for Students in writing and give an academic justification for choosing the program. These students must work closely with their CAS and departmental advisers to plan the courses they will take while studying away. After the petition is reviewed, the student will receive notification of the decision. For further information, contact the Office of the Associate Dean for Students (726 Broadway, 7th floor; 212-998-8140).
