How do I undeclare the Business Studies minor?
Please use the Albert Minor application (on the "Academics" tab of your Student Center) to request the removal of the Business Studies minor.
When should I declare the Business Studies minor?
Students should wait until they have declared a major and have taken at least two of the requirements before declaring the Business Studies minor. In the meantime, it is important to utilize the information on this website in order to begin working towards the minor requirements.
How do I know if I am required to take additional courses towards the Business Studies minor?
Students only need to take courses beyond those explicitly required for the minor if they will double-count more than two of those required courses with another major/minor. For every double-counted course beyond the allowed two, minors will need to take an additional Stern elective. Please email cas.business@nyu.edu if you have questions about how your minor courses are being double-counted.
How are transfer credits evaluated towards the Business Studies minor?
Whether you are an external transfer student from another institution or an internal transfer student from another division of NYU, all transfer credit must be evaluated in order to determine its applicability towards the minor. Please wait until your transfer credit is listed as "Posted" in the Transfer Credit Report section of your Student Center. Then:
- For Economics, Math, Principles of Financial Accounting (when not used as a prerequisite for another Stern course), or a Stern elective (when not used as a prerequisite for another Stern course): Fill out this Business Studies Transfer Credit Form. Your request will be processed within about ten business days. Please note: you do not need to submit a transfer credit evaluation request for a course that has already been approved as equivalent by that's course's home department - e.g., if Economics has already approved your transfer credit as equivalent to ECON-UA 1, you do not need to submit a separate request to Business Studies. Just forward any correspondence that you have from the department demonstrating the approval for this equivalency
- For Statistics transfer courses: If you will also need to take STAT-UB 3 (Regression and Forecasting Models), you will need to have your transfer course evaluated directly by Stern. Please consult this website for guidance. Once Stern has approved your Statistics course as a prerequisite for STAT-UB 3, please forward proof of approval to cas.business@nyu.edu
- For Accounting/other Stern courses to be used as a prerequisite for a more advanced Stern course: If you plan to you use an a transfer course as a prerequisite for a more advanced Stern course (e.g., you want to use your introductory Accounting course as a prerequisite for ACCT-UB 4, Managerial Accounting), you would need to have your course directly evaluated by Stern. Please consult this website for guidance.
Note that for Business Studies minor students pursuing Track A of the minor, as well as those pursuing the minor before 2016, the maximum number of transferred courses is two of the CAS courses (including Introduction to Macroeconomics, Introduction to Microeconomics, and Calculus) and half of the Stern courses (Principles of Financial Accounting, Introduction to Marketing, etc.) to count towards the minor.
For students pursuing Track B of the minor, the maximum number of transferred courses is two.
All students in the College of Arts and Science, including transfer students, must complete a minimum of 64 credits within the College (UA credits) in order to receive their degree. Students who meet the 64-credit rule may also elect to take up to 16 credits at other university divisions. Please consult with an advisor to determine if you will be able to fulfill the requirements of the minor and have the appropriate amount of credits to graduate.
Can I use AP/IB credit towards the Business Studies minor?
Students may use eligible AP or other advanced standing credit in place no more than two required minor courses (consult the minor requirements page for information about which requirements could be satisfied by advanced standing credit). Feel free to contact cas.business@nyu.edu if you have questions about whether or not your advanced standing credit can count towards the minor
For students who have advaned standing credit equivalent to 3 or more Business Studies minor requirements: You will need to choose 2 minor requirements to satisfy with advanced standing credit, and one that you will need to complete with NYU coursework. For example, a student with a 4/5 on AP Calculus, a 4/5 on AP Macroeconomics, and a 4/5 on AP Microeconomics can only count two of these exams towards the minor - they will need to take a NYU course in place of the 3rd. Students in this situation should contact cas.business@nyu.edu for advisement
Advanced standing credit can never be used for statistics, regression and forecasting, or any Stern courses.
Can I count Business/Management/Finance courses from the Tandon School of Engineering towards the Business Studies minor?
No. The Tandon School of Engineering has its own business-related minors, one in Management and another in Finance. These courses are distinct from the business courses at Stern and therefore cannot be counted towards the Business Studies minor.
Which economics courses am I permitted to take towards the Business Studies minor?
Most students will be taking Introduction to Macroeconomics and Introduction to Microeconomics to satisfy this requirement. Only students who are part of Liberal Studies may satisfy this requirement with Economics I (ECI-UF-1001) and Economics II (ECI-UF-1002). Students may also satisfy this requirement with Advanced Placement/ international equivalent credit.
Which calculus course should I take for the Business Studies minor?
Economics majors must take Math for Economics I (MATH-UA 211) for their major, which will also satisfy the calculus requirement for the Business Studies minor. NYU Tandon students must take Calculus II (MA 1124) for their program of study, which will also satisfy the calculus requirement for the Business Studies minor. All other students may take Calculus I (MATH-UA 121) or have AP Calculus credit with a score of 4 or 5 in order to satisfy the calculus requirement.
Which statistics courses am I permitted to take towards the Business Studies minor?
Please refer to the Statistics and Regression section of our minor requirements page for a full list of the NYU Statistics courses (+STAT-UB 3) that are approved to satisfy this component of the minor.
For students who have taken a statistics course taken outside of the University, and who will need to take a regression and forecasting course housed in Stern, please request course evaluation directly from Stern. Please consult this website for guidance.
Do I need to take a course in regression and forecasting? If I do, which one should I take?
Note that statistics is a prerequisite for regression; they may not be taken concurrently.
For students who entered NYU before 2016:
All Business Studies minors are required to take a course in regression and forecasting. Most students who are not majoring in economics will take Regression & Forecasting Models (STAT-UB 3) after completing an approved statistics course. Students who take Statistics for Business Control and Regression and Forecasting Models (STAT-UB 103) will cover regression and forecasting in this course, and thus do not need to take an additional regression and forecasting course.
ECONOMICS MAJORS: Students pursuing both the Business Studies minor and the economics major will cover regression analysis in the required major course Topics in Econometrics (ECON-UA 380) or Introduction to Econometrics (ECON-UA 266); therefore, they are not required to take an additional two-credit course in regression and forecasting for the minor. However, economics majors who wish to take Foundations of Finance (FINC-UB 2) and/or Operations Management (OPMG-UB 1) for the minor should note that these two courses have as their prerequisite a course in regression and forecasting. Therefore, they may only be taken after Topics in Econometrics. Economics policy majors may, if they wish, take the two-credit regression and forecasting course. This is not required for the economics policy major, but it allows economics students to take FINC-UB 2 and/or OPMG-UB 1 earlier in their undergraduate careers.
For students who entered NYU after 2016:
All Track A Business Studies minors are required to take a course in regression and forecasting.
Can I receive credit for an internship through the Business Studies minor?
No, the Business Studies minor consists of coursework only. Internship credit cannot be substituted. If you plan to carry out an internship, please consult with your advisor in your major department about the possibility of obtaining credit for the work you will be doing.
Is there a specific order to the courses?
No, although we recommend that students complete Introduction to Macroeconomics and Introduction to Microeconomics, Calculus, and Statistics prior to taking any of the Stern courses. Please keep in mind the various prerequisites and corequisites for each course (i.e., calculus is a prerequisite for statistics, and statistics is a prerequisite for regression). For information on the courses for the minor, please check the Courses page.
How do I register for Stern courses?
Please refer to Stern's Open Access list to find out which sections are open to non-Stern students and when these courses will become available for registration. Students must register for the non-Stern sections designated in Albert as "Other NYU Divisions Only." Please note that Stern courses are not available to first-year students. Stern courses are also available during the summer and are not restricted to the Open Access List. Any registration issues regarding Stern courses can be addressed directly to Stern Undergraduate Advising at uc.advising@stern.nyu.edu.
Do I have to be a declared Business Studies minor to take Stern courses?
No, you do not have to be a declared Business Studies minor in order to register for Stern courses. Stern will release an Open Access list before the registration period begins, and it will have all the courses available to non-Stern students as when registration in these courses opens to non-Stern students. Please visit the Stern Academic Advising website for more information. Any registration issues regarding Stern courses can be addressed directly to Stern Undergraduate Advising at uc.advising@stern.nyu.edu.
Are there courses I can take at an approved NYU Study Abroad site which would count towards the Business Studies minor?
Yes, most of the NYU Study Abroad sites will have at least one or two courses you may take towards the completion of the minor. Please check the NYU Study Abroad website to find out which courses are offered in which semester so you can plan accordingly. We encourage all students to study abroad at one of the many NYU Study Abroad sites.
What if I want to take courses towards the Business Studies minor at a non-NYU Study Abroad site?
We encourage all students to study abroad if the opportunity presents itself. However, we recommend that students contact cas.business@nyu.edu in advance of registering for non-NYU courses, so these credits can be evaluated for their applicability to the minor.
Where can I find the course descriptions?
Descriptions for the Stern courses can be found in the Stern Academic Bulletin.
Descriptions for CAS courses can be found in the College of Arts and Science Bulletin or through the College of Arts and Science Majors and Minors page.
Whom should I contact if I still have questions?
Students can address questions or concerns about the minor by emailing cas.business@nyu.edu.
