Instructions for Dean's Certification
What is a Dean's Certification?
Some health professions schools require that applicants or, more commonly, accepted students submit a Dean's Certification. This form (from the school) or letter (produced by the Preprofessional Advising Center) typically verifies an applicant's academic record and helps schools to determine whether any disciplinary actions were taken against the applicant by the undergraduate institution. If you apply to a school that requires a Dean's Certification, fill out your portion of the form (or request a letter from us), then follow the instructions below to have your form or letter completed by the Preprofessional Advising Center.
NOTE: Before submitting professional school applications, applicants should check with their respective school's dean's office (for academic violations), or the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards (for conduct violations) to determine whether they have any disciplinary actions on records. To contact the CAS dean's office regarding academic violations, please email academic.standards@nyu.edu.
How do I get my Dean's Certification completed?
CAS undergraduates and CAS alumni should email preprof.docs@nyu.edu with:
- Your full name (both your current legal name from your primary application and any former names you may have gone by while enrolled at NYU)
- Your N number
- The term and year you graduated from CAS
- A PDF copy of the Dean's Certification form from your school with your portion completed
We are unable to accept forms that are hand delivered or sent via physical mail to our office.
When will my Dean's Certification be processed?
Generally, Dean's Certifications take one to two weeks to process. You will recieve email confirmation when the form has been submitted. However, if you have a time-sensitive issue, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can try to accommodate your needs.
Please note: some health professions schools do not ask for a Dean's Certification until you have accepted an offer of admission, and some schools do not require one at all. Do not worry if your application does not include a Dean's Certification. In addition, Dean's Certifications are never processed through centralized application services.
Notes for postbacc students
Students or alumni of NYU's Postbaccalaureate Prehealth Studies program should note that, if a school requests a Dean's Certification from your undergraduate institution, it is your responsibility to contact that institution to request the completion of a Dean's Certification form. Please be sure to request that your undergraduate institution sends the completed form or letter directly to the individual program to which you have applied.
