Speaking Freely Online
Speaking Freely Online (SFO) is an extension of NYU’s face-to-face Speaking Freely Program. In the online version, learners can engage in Coach-Led Sessions (which take place in real-time online) and/or one-on-one sessions with a language partner (which can take place either in-person or online).
SFO, based on the philosophy that language is a key to a culture, aims to:
- Help students improve their foreign language skills through video chat and/or in-person interactions
- Connect learners and promote skills sharing among members of the NYU community
- Promote an understanding of other cultures and global issues
- Foster language study and encourage students to study abroad, especially through NYU programs and exchanges
The core of both the face-to-face and online versions of NYU Speaking Freely is weekly sessions taught by fluent speakers who have previous language teaching experience and have a passion to share cultural knowledge with others. These sessions emphasize conversational knowledge, learning practical words and phrases you might use when traveling or studying abroad, as well as vocabulary related to various aspects of art, history, and culture. SFO offers sessions in Spanish, French, Mandarin and Arabic.

SFO allows users to find and interact directly with a language partner. Through this exchange, users can improve their conversational skills, learn practical words and phrases they might use when traveling or studying abroad, and increase vocabulary related to various aspects of art, history, and culture.
The flexible structure of SFO allows users to interact with their partners on their own time, at their own pace, and either online or in-person.
