Career Paths in STEM

Guest: Dr. Tatyana Gavrilchenko
Career Paths in STEM comprises discussion and Q&A sessions about career choices after college, and provides networking opportunities in STEM fields. Dr. Gavrilchenko spans the fields of math, physics, and biology. After graduating from U.C. Berkeley in 2013 with a B.A. in Mathematics and Astronomy, she worked on the structure and function of biological fluid flow networks as a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania. She received her Ph.D. in Physics in 2020 and is currently searching for underlying physical principles of embryo development and tissue reorganization.

Rafael Rivera from NYU School of Medicine admissions will speak about the medical school application process and what they look for in applicants. There will be a presentation followed by Q&A.

International Women's Day Celebration
Date: Monday, March 8, 6:00–7:30 PM
This is an informal event to celebrate International Women's Day 2021, and the women who have inspired us. Feel free to invite women friends, relatives, mentors, changemakers, and/or bring stories of women who have inspired you. To commemorate the official theme of International Women's Day 2021, #ChoosetoChallenge, we will be taking a (virtual!) group selfie to show our support! We will also engage in mindful meditation and gentle movement with Steinhardt Music and Performing Arts Professions Program Administrator Allegra Romita (MA, CMA, EdM, RYT). We look forward to you joining us for an evening spent empowering one another through community and movement. CAS students are welcome!
Virtual Showcase Viewing of "Picture a Scientist"

Watch the documentary film "Picture a Scientist", at your convenience, anytime between Sunday, March 14, 12pm noon through Wednesday, March 17, 12pm noon. This is a film by Ian Cheney and Sharon Shattuck, which we licensed specifically for WINS members to view in this 72-hr window. A mandatory event will follow on Thurs March 18 at 8PM to discuss topics raised in the film (see below). Here's more information about the film.
Panel and Q&A: "Navigating Challenges at Different Career Stages"

Featuring Professors Christine Rushlow (Professor, Biology, NYU FAS), Gira Bhabha (Assistant Professor, Cell Biology, NYU Skirball Institute), and Noelle Antao (Postdoctoral Fellow, Cell Biology, NYU Skirball Institute). Moderated by WINS coordinator Federica Satori (PhD candidate, NYU Biology). Issues raised in the film "Picture a Scientist" will be discussed.
WINS Spring Lecture: "The Public Health Impact of the Shifting Landscape of Illicit Drugs"

This CAS-wide event features Professor Courtney McKnight, Clinical Assistant Professor of Epidemiology. Dr. Courtney McKnight will be presenting findings from her research examining the shifting landscape of illicit drugs in New York State. Dr. Courtney McKnight is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the School of Global Public Health. She specializes in mixed methods research focused on the epidemiology of drug use, drug overdose, emerging drug trends and HIV and HCV infection.
Psych Mic Night

Hillary Lin, MD spoke in Maya Metser's "Psych Mic Event Series," which highlights professionals in psychology. Dr. Lin is a physician and founder of Curio, a creative and social mental health startup. Hillary was trained at Stanford (BS, MD, GSB Cert, and Residency), where she also developed her passion for healthcare innovation. She previously founded colon cancer screening startup GutSavvy, and created several healthtech apps (GoalZu, CoPilot Health, PairWise, Science Fight Cancer). WINS Seniors Speak
